Posing 101 : BOUDOIR

Posing 101 Vancouver Fraser Valley Boudoir Photographer Jessica Rae.jpg

Most clients number one apprehension going into an Intimate Portrait + Boudoir Photography Session is:

β€œHOW DO I POSE?!”

First… breathe. We’ve got this!

My goal is to create candid + authentic imagery.

I try to stray away from overly posed images, as I feel it comes across as contrived and that is the last thing I want this experience and ART to be!

I do guide, adjust and even demo poses for you but at the end of the day what I want is to photograph YOU. I don’t want you to look like 100 other people in my portfolio. I want to capture your essence, your core.

Now, if you have had a boudoir session done before this may seem like the polar opposite to your experience with your last photographer. And that is something that I pride myself on - it’s what sets me apart. It’s not creating images for societal expectations of how you should look. It’s about the overall feeling of the image. You will look beautiful because you are always beautiful, not because I put you in some pre-determined pose.

There are still guidelines that we go over before we start the session - general rules if you will. But rules are meant to be broken some times!

One of my favourite quotes sums this up for me:

β€œLearn the rules like a pro
so you can break them
like an artist”

- Pablo Picasso

In order to do this YOU have to show up! What I mean is you need to be prepared to interject and be an active participant in this experience. You need to be willing to connect with your body, your story, your WHY. This is what makes each and every experience and final outcome unique to each and every client.

Take note in the images above. You’ll notice that we didn’t do any drastic changes. The client is simply moving slowly and connecting with themselves. We don’t need to change everything up for each individual image. Each one stands alone but together they create a story with movement.

Below you can see that we have three very different poses with very little effort on either my part or my clients. They simply rolled over. But you see, it’s not just rolling over - it’s the moments in between, that’s where I find the magic.

Do you want β€œstoic, posed and contrived” photographs then I am not the photographer for you.

If you want Authentic, Raw and Vulnerable images, that showcase and capture YOU - Then you have come to the right place and I invite you to join me in creating ART that is unique to you.

Before you come in for your session I encourage you to spend some time getting (re)acquainted with connecting to your body. Trace your fingers on your skin, give yourself a hug. Feel your lines, your curves, your dimples and give them some love. You do not have be in love with your body, but you should to be prepared to connect with it. It’s a vessel of love and light and is deserving of your respect.

I look forward to photographing you!

xoxo
